Recognition of the need to protect marine biodiversity through the establishment and effective management of marine protected areas (MPAs) has been growing worldwide.
In the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in 2002, building a representative MPA network by 2012 was established as a global target.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Environment has been promoting cooperation mainly with the Asian and Oceanian region for protecting coral reefs. The Ministry analyzed the latest coral reef distribution using artificial satellite data in East Asia, Micronesia and Melanesia, and prepared GIS data indicating coral reef distribution.
This system has been developed to make the coral reef habitat map available to the general public via the Internet with a view to contributing to the studies and protection of coral reefs in specific regions.
Artificial satellites are used for preparing coral reef distribution data. The accuracy of the coral reef habitat map therefore depends on the accuracy of satellite image classification. When you use the distribution data therefore, please note that the data may not necessarily reflect the actual conditions.
